The University of Southampton has performed a study by Dr C. William Keevil, indicating that copper has certain effects on the elimination of E-coli, salmonella, MRSA, and H1N1 virus. Link To Study. The study simulated ‘droplet contamination’ of H1N1 Influenza A on a copper surface and a stainless steel surface separately. On the steel surface, there were about 500,000 live bacteria following the elasped time. In comparison, the number of bacteria on the copper surface was eliminated by 75% after just one hour, and roughly 500 bacteria remained after 6 hours. The study also ‘shows that copper targets various cellular sites, not only killing bacterial and viral pathogens, but also rapidly destroying their nucleic acid genetic material so there is no chance of mutation occurring and nothing to pass on to other microbes, a process called horizontal gene transfer. Consequently, this helps prevent breeding the next generation of superbug.’ Dr C. William Keevil.

William Keevil 博士在銅和不鏽鋼表面上培養甲型H1N1流感病毒並進行了觀察。24小時後，不鏽鋼表面上還有約50萬細菌生存。 而銅表面上的細菌在一小時之內被消除約75%。過了6小時後只有約500個細菌生存。 研究指出，銅對消除大腸菌，沙門氏菌，MRSA等超級細菌以及甲型H1N1流感病毒都有一定效果。防止具有抗菌素耐性的細菌轉移及感染。 研究指出，基因水平轉移能夠在人們經常接觸的不鏽鋼杯，餐桌等周邊環境發生。而與銅接觸時，有迅速殺死細菌的效果。 不鏽鋼表面上大腸桿菌 （Escherichia coli)，肺炎克雷伯菌 （Klebsiella pneumonia) 能長期（幾週）生存。而銅和銅合金的兩種病毒快速死掉，且觀察到微生物內的基因被破壞。由此可見，銅能有效防止基因轉移及感染的擴散。

The Southampton researchers found that a closely-related human coronavirus - 229E - can remain infectious on common surface materials for several days, but is rapidly destroyed on copper. According to World Health Organization, CoVID-19 is a type of Coronavirus that is closely related to SARS and MERS.
